tert-Butanol is a tertiary alcohol with the chemical formula (CH₃)₃COH. It is the simplest tertiary alcohol and one of the four structural isomers of butanol. It is widely used in chemical and laboratory applications due to its solvent properties, water miscibility, and role as a chemical intermediate.

tert-Butanol is commercially produced from isobutane as a co-product in propylene oxide manufacturing. It can also be prepared by the catalytic hydration of isobutylene. In laboratory synthesis, tert-butanol may be obtained through the reaction of acetone with methylmagnesium chloride followed by hydrolysis.

tert-Butanol is a colorless solid or liquid with a characteristic camphor-like odor. It has a molecular weight of 74.12 g/mol and a density of approximately 0.775 g/cm³. It melts at approximately 25.5°C and boils at about 82.2°C. tert-Butanol is completely miscible with water and is also miscible with ethanol and diethyl ether. Unlike primary and secondary alcohols, its tertiary structure makes it resistant to oxidation into carbonyl compounds.

In chemical and laboratory applications, tert-butanol is widely used as a solvent and reaction medium. It is employed as an ethanol denaturant, a paint remover ingredient, and a gasoline octane booster and oxygenate. It also serves as an important chemical intermediate in the production of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE), and tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP). Additionally, tert-butanol is utilized in the manufacture of fragrances, flavoring agents, and specialty chemicals.
