Ferroin Solution
Ferroin Solution is a redox indicator solution commonly used in analytical chemistry, particularly in complexometric and oxidation–reduction titrations. The active component, ferroin, is a coordination complex formed between iron(II) ions and 1,10-phenanthroline. The solution exhibits a distinct color change from red to pale blue depending on the oxidation state, making it useful as an indicator in laboratory analyses.
🏭⚗️ Synthesis
Ferroin Solution is prepared by reacting iron(II) salts, such as iron(II) sulfate, with 1,10-phenanthroline in aqueous solution under controlled conditions. The resulting iron–phenanthroline complex forms a stable red-colored coordination compound that is subsequently diluted to the desired concentration for analytical applications.

Ferroin Solution is widely used as a redox indicator in analytical chemistry, especially in cerium(IV) and dichromate titrations. It is also applied in complexometric analyses and electrochemical studies due to its reversible color changes associated with oxidation and reduction reactions. In research laboratories, ferroin complexes are additionally utilized in coordination chemistry and catalytic reaction studies.
